International airports have been using equipments for screening the passenger’s luggages, as well as shipments and postal matters for over 30 years. Over the past decade, these devices have undergone enormous development. The so-called isolation container, commonly known as “bombüst”, is the only suitable device for the safe separation of explosive materials and improvised explosive devices found during the person and luggage inspection.
The modern bomb isolation containers evolved along two different development processes:
- One of the main groups includes the several centimeters thick rigid-walled explosive energy absorption and shrapnel diverter solutions made with a special composition of mineral material. In this case, the inner wall of the bomb container absorbs, nullifies most of the explosive energy. This absorption takes place in two ways. On one hand, finding ways between the contact surfaces of the porous mineral particles forming the inner wall of the container, the suddenly released hot gases can spread and cool down in several directions, and on the other hand, this sudden expansion physically destroys the mineral, in which significant motion energy is digested. Subsequently, the expanding gases stretches the specially – heat-treated, mechanically shaped, and alloyed exterior wall of the bomb container. The container can prevent the scattering of the shrapnels which is extremely dangerous to the people, even when the container is maximally deformed. The isolation tank can be removed from the public area immediately after a hazardous, potentially dangerous or unclaimed luggage, explosive device and explosive material is inserted into it, and then it can be stored in a pre-selected security zone until the firearm specialist arrives. Transportation can be done on its own wheels, it can be towed by a forklift or any other means of transportation, including an airport trolley.
- The other group includes the soft-walled bomb blankets, bomb walls and bomb containers, which, while they allow a small part of the explosive energy to detonate outwards, but it also greatly minimizes the destructive force of the detonation. The primary goal of these protective devices is – matching its protective class – to divert the shrapnels. In contrast to the rigid-walled containers, these protective devices may only weigh half, quarter or even a fraction of the rigid-walled versions weight, which makes their mobility and separation much simpler and easier to solve.
